As more and more baby boomers retire they are considering a move cross country to be near children and grandchildren. Moving cross country can be very stressful. If you are going to move cross country here are 3 considerations you might have.
Moving across country with a van line is almost always done based on weight and volume in a large 53 foot truck. The old book collection, magazines and heavy tools need to be thinned out and/or eliminated. Is it time for new mattresses? The old wicker porch furniture and potting plant pots have to stay, as well.
By the time you thin out the items you do not need to take on your cross country move, you inevitably will be left with family heirlooms, antiques, and possibly some valuable art, that needs to be moved. You cannot just trust any cross country moving company to get those items safely to their destination. All too often, pieces end up not showing up or, are broken beyond repair. How do you vet a cross country mover? It is not as easy as it sounds. Just because your next door neighbor had a good move from NH to Colorado with a van line, it does not mean you will have a good move to California, with the same cross country moving company. Often there are different drivers and it always depends on who they “pick-up” to help unload. One of the best ways is to wade through a few websites of “local” companies who offer cross country moving. Look for: real people and real trucks/warehouses. This will indicate that they exist. Next, visit their offices. This will tell a lot about the service you can expect, based on how neat, clean and organized things look.
Certainly you want to consider price but, in today’s world of over-the-road truck regulations, cost of fuel and labor costs, you pretty much will “get what you pay for” with you cross country move, if you base your choice strictly on price. Most reputable companies will appear to be quite a bit higher than all of the “internet, fly-by-night” cross country movers. In fact, there are way more sleazy internet companies then there are legitimate companies. Never use a company that says “Guaranteed flat rate” this is the worst thing you can do. These type cross country movers third and fourth party the move and you will be greatly, greatly disappointed…guaranteed!
