THE DATA THAT SUPPORTS USING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CUSTOM CRATING

Wooden crates are often used to crate expensive art and/or heavy, fragile items. They can be used and reused multiples times and retrofitted to fit a multitude of items, making custom crating very sustainable. Sustainable data is the data surrounding energy, water, materials, waste and time that a product or process can save. Here’s a look at some of the sustainable data that supports the use of wooden crates.

  1. ENERGY – Every time a wooden crate is used there is a savings of energy. For example: Wood is processed from trees which need be cut down in a forest, hauled by truck to a mill, cut into lumber, taken to a hardware or lumber store and then delivered to a business, like William C Huff White Glove Moving and Storage Company. The lumber is then cut into pieces that make up the crate. There are several steps where energy is consumed for a wooden crate to be manufactured.
  2. WATER - Most people do not realize that logs from trees must be immediately cut into lumber while the logs are still fresh. If they are allowed to dry the boards, when cut, can splinter and break. Often lumber mills will run sprinkler systems non-stop over the un-cut logs until they are ready to be milled.
  3. MATERIALS – Whenever a wooden crate is reused, materials are being saved. Some of the wooden crates I built more than 15 years ago are still being used for crating up artwork. The number of materials saved for these crates can add up to a lot of valuable trees, truly supporting positive sustainability data.
  4. WASTE - When logs are cut into lumber, not all a log can be used for lumber. Every time a log is cut, there is about 30% waste of the tree. Reusing wooden crates supports eliminates the need to continually build new crates.
  5. TIME - An average size wooden art crate can take as much as an hour to manufacture. More complicated “cube” crates can take even longer to make. Reusing wooden crates supports sustainable data by saving valuable time for the crate building company and builds better profits.

To further the sustainable data surrounding our wooden crate building, all the electricity required to run the warehouse lighting, air conditioning and saws in William C Huff Companies’ is generated by solar power. The William C Huff White Glove Moving and Storage Company has saved over 1.3 million pounds of CO2 in less than seven years! William C Huff Companies is proud to say that it is contributing in a very positive fashion to sustainability data.
