THE POWER OF GIVING

Many books and articles have been written on the benefits of giving; the feeling one gets from helping others seems to create a sense of well-being. Our team at William C. Huff has always been involved in the community and one of our most important core values is giving back. We have been fortunate to be involved with sponsoring events for local non-profit organizations such as Friends of Foster Children Forever, who provides local foster children with academic mentoring, so they can succeed in school; The Founders Fund which provides college scholarships to underprivileged high school graduates; Miracles in Action, whose mission is to change the lives of the poor in Guatemala; and other local charitable organizations. We pull together each Christmas with other business owners to collect toys for the poorest of the poor in Immokalee, Florida.  This year we contributed over 50 new toys for boys and girls; a simple gift can change a child’s outlook and attitude. Buying a toy conjures up feelings of happy memories for most. Giving is a blessing to all who receive and to all who give. There is POWER in giving and studies show that the area of the brain that is responsible for our cravings and pleasure responds when giving. According to an article in the Huffington Post, MRI technology showed when people donated to a worthy cause, the midbrain region of the brain lit up, showing the link between charitable giving and pleasure. This reward or pleasure response to giving is the physiological reason behind the ‘warm glow’ or that good feeling you get when you give and why you may choose to spend money on others or charity compared to yourself. But does giving actually make you happier? According to a survey and study by researchers, it does. Giving a service or material gift makes a positive impact and difference on the life of the recipient, but it must be given unconditionally without any expectation of a reciprocal action from the receiver.
