THE TROUBLE WITH MOVING – PART 3 – WHO SHOULD I CALL?

It’s at this point of our Trouble With Moving discussion that I’m going to inject some shameless self-promotion. As I’ve mentioned in other blog posts, there are many moving companies available to assist with your move. There are your standard movers who will happily move your one-bedroom college apartment. There are movers that can move your 20’ tall Godzilla sculpture and also handle your 2,000 pound decorative concrete bench. But is there one single company that can help with all of those needs? ABSOLUTELY. For the last ten years William C. Huff Companies has shifted its business model to be a single-source moving and storage provider. Over the years, we’ve helped our clients with projects ranging from moving just a few pieces around town to shipping 30,000 square feet of inventory from the northeastern United States to India. We’ve hoisted a three-quarter million dollar piano up 24 floors, we’ve received and stored an absolutely massive Gerhard Richter art work (it required a custom semi-trailer just to move it!) and handled the logistics of moving a suite of solid concrete outdoor furniture. While we still do more typical moving projects all the time, for years we’ve been the go-to company for high-end clients with the more challenging items. Far more often than not we’re able to take care of all of our client’s needs. However, when we encounter an item that requires more specific care, we will source the right company for the job then we’ll work in concert with them to accomplish the task at hand. (On one occasion we needed to source a rigging company to fabricate a sliding rack system to “catch” a 1200 pound steel and cement coffee table that we craned up to the balcony of a condo 22 floors up.) Do you have an exotic car that you need to ship to your summer home? We’ll get it there. Does your Picasso need some gentle restoration work? We have the resources to take care of that for you. Our clients want to be able to make the fewest phone calls possible to get their needs taken care of. It’s our hope that if you have a moving or storage need that you’ll call us first. We can assist you with just about any moving or logistical need you may have. However, not every move requires the services that we offer. We certainly understand that, but I’ll take this opportunity to offer a word of caution here: Do your research when contacting a moving company, particularly when using the internet. There are a ton of “brokers” online masquerading as actual moving companies. In reality what they do is take the information you provide, then farm the work out to other actual moving companies. This can lead to extreme headaches with the moving process. There can be many hands involved, but few who are willing to actually take responsibility for what’s happening. Generally it’s the client who gets left out in the cold. The last thing anyone wants to have no idea where all of their earthly possessions are and to have to call companies all over the country to find out. So take the time to do the leg work. Talk to your friends and neighbors and see who they’ve had good luck with. And certainly, feel free to call us! We’re happy to answer questions for you anytime!
